Jacobus

1

1 : Iacobus Dei et Domini nostri Iesu Christi servus duodecim tribubus quae sunt in dispersione salutem
James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, to the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad, greeting.
2 : omne gaudium existimate fratres mei cum in temptationibus variis incideritis
My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations;
3 : scientes quod probatio fidei vestrae patientiam operatur
Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience.
4 : patientia autem opus perfectum habeat ut sitis perfecti et integri in nullo deficientes
But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.
5 : si quis autem vestrum indiget sapientiam postulet a Deo qui dat omnibus affluenter et non inproperat et dabitur ei
If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.
6 : postulet autem in fide nihil haesitans qui enim haesitat similis est fluctui maris qui a vento movetur et circumfertur
But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed.
7 : non ergo aestimet homo ille quod accipiat aliquid a Domino
For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord.
8 : vir duplex animo inconstans in omnibus viis suis
A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.
9 : glorietur autem frater humilis in exaltatione sua
Let the brother of low degree rejoice in that he is exalted:
10 : dives autem in humilitate sua quoniam sicut flos faeni transibit
But the rich, in that he is made low: because as the flower of the grass he shall pass away.
11 : exortus est enim sol cum ardore et arefecit faenum et flos eius decidit et decor vultus eius deperiit ita et dives in itineribus suis marcescet
For the sun is no sooner risen with a burning heat, but it withereth the grass, and the flower thereof falleth, and the grace of the fashion of it perisheth: so also shall the rich man fade away in his ways.
12 : beatus vir qui suffert temptationem quia cum probatus fuerit accipiet coronam vitae quam repromisit Deus diligentibus se
Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him.
13 : nemo cum temptatur dicat quoniam a Deo temptor Deus enim intemptator malorum est ipse autem neminem temptat
Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man:
14 : unusquisque vero temptatur a concupiscentia sua abstractus et inlectus
But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed.
15 : dein concupiscentia cum conceperit parit peccatum peccatum vero cum consummatum fuerit generat mortem
Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.
16 : nolite itaque errare fratres mei dilectissimi
Do not err, my beloved brethren.
17 : omne datum optimum et omne donum perfectum desursum est descendens a Patre luminum apud quem non est transmutatio nec vicissitudinis obumbratio
Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.
18 : voluntarie genuit nos verbo veritatis ut simus initium aliquod creaturae eius
Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures.
19 : scitis fratres mei dilecti sit autem omnis homo velox ad audiendum tardus autem ad loquendum et tardus ad iram
Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath:
20 : ira enim viri iustitiam Dei non operatur
For the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God.
21 : propter quod abicientes omnem inmunditiam et abundantiam malitiae in mansuetudine suscipite insitum verbum quod potest salvare animas vestras
Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls.
22 : estote autem factores verbi et non auditores tantum fallentes vosmet ipsos
But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.
23 : quia si quis auditor est verbi et non factor hic conparabitur viro consideranti vultum nativitatis suae in speculo
For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass:
24 : consideravit enim se et abiit et statim oblitus est qualis fuerit
For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was.
25 : qui autem perspexerit in lege perfecta libertatis et permanserit non auditor obliviosus factus sed factor operis hic beatus in facto suo erit
But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.
26 : si quis autem putat se religiosum esse non refrenans linguam suam sed seducens cor suum huius vana est religio
If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man's religion is vain.
27 : religio munda et inmaculata apud Deum et Patrem haec est visitare pupillos et viduas in tribulatione eorum inmaculatum se custodire ab hoc saeculo
Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.

1 : fratres mei nolite in personarum acceptione habere fidem Domini nostri Iesu Christi gloriae
My brethren, have not the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, with respect of persons.
2 : etenim si introierit in conventu vestro vir aureum anulum habens in veste candida introierit autem et pauper in sordido habitu
For if there come unto your assembly a man with a gold ring, in goodly apparel, and there come in also a poor man in vile raiment;
3 : et intendatis in eum qui indutus est veste praeclara et dixeritis tu sede hic bene pauperi autem dicatis tu sta illic aut sede sub scabillo pedum meorum
And ye have respect to him that weareth the gay clothing, and say unto him, Sit thou here in a good place; and say to the poor, Stand thou there, or sit here under my footstool:
4 : nonne iudicatis apud vosmet ipsos et facti estis iudices cogitationum iniquarum
Are ye not then partial in yourselves, and are become judges of evil thoughts?
5 : audite fratres mei dilectissimi nonne Deus elegit pauperes in hoc mundo divites in fide et heredes regni quod repromisit Deus diligentibus se
Hearken, my beloved brethren, Hath not God chosen the poor of this world rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he hath promised to them that love him?
6 : vos autem exhonorastis pauperem nonne divites per potentiam opprimunt vos et ipsi trahunt vos ad iudicia
But ye have despised the poor. Do not rich men oppress you, and draw you before the judgment seats?
7 : nonne ipsi blasphemant bonum nomen quod invocatum est super vos
Do not they blaspheme that worthy name by the which ye are called?
8 : si tamen legem perficitis regalem secundum scripturas diliges proximum tuum sicut te ipsum bene facitis
If ye fulfil the royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, ye do well:
9 : si autem personas accipitis peccatum operamini redarguti a lege quasi transgressores
But if ye have respect to persons, ye commit sin, and are convinced of the law as transgressors.
10 : quicumque autem totam legem servaverit offendat autem in uno factus est omnium reus
For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.
11 : qui enim dixit non moechaberis dixit et non occides quod si non moechaberis occides autem factus es transgressor legis
For he that said, Do not commit adultery, said also, Do not kill. Now if thou commit no adultery, yet if thou kill, thou art become a transgressor of the law.
12 : sic loquimini et sic facite sicut per legem libertatis incipientes iudicari
So speak ye, and so do, as they that shall be judged by the law of liberty.
13 : iudicium enim sine misericordia illi qui non fecit misericordiam superexultat autem misericordia iudicio
For he shall have judgment without mercy, that hath shewed no mercy; and mercy rejoiceth against judgment.
14 : quid proderit fratres mei si fidem quis dicat se habere opera autem non habeat numquid poterit fides salvare eum
What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? can faith save him?
15 : si autem frater aut soror nudi sunt et indigent victu cotidiano
If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food,
16 : dicat autem aliquis de vobis illis ite in pace calefacimini et saturamini non dederitis autem eis quae necessaria sunt corporis quid proderit
And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit?
17 : sic et fides si non habeat opera mortua est in semet ipsam
Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.
18 : sed dicet quis tu fidem habes et ego opera habeo ostende mihi fidem tuam sine operibus et ego ostendam tibi ex operibus fidem meam
Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works.
19 : tu credis quoniam unus est Deus bene facis et daemones credunt et contremescunt
Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble.
20 : vis autem scire o homo inanis quoniam fides sine operibus otiosa est
But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?
21 : Abraham pater noster nonne ex operibus iustificatus est offerens Isaac filium suum super altare
Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar?
22 : vides quoniam fides cooperabatur operibus illius et ex operibus fides consummata est
Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect?
23 : et suppleta est scriptura dicens credidit Abraham Deo et reputatum est illi ad iustitiam et amicus Dei appellatus est
And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God.
24 : videtis quoniam ex operibus iustificatur homo et non ex fide tantum
Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only.
25 : similiter autem et Raab meretrix nonne ex operibus iustificata est suscipiens nuntios et alia via eiciens
Likewise also was not Rahab the harlot justified by works, when she had received the messengers, and had sent them out another way?
26 : sicut enim corpus sine spiritu emortuum est ita et fides sine operibus mortua est
For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.

1 : nolite plures magistri fieri fratres mei scientes quoniam maius iudicium sumitis
My brethren, be not many masters, knowing that we shall receive the greater condemnation.
2 : in multis enim offendimus omnes si quis in verbo non offendit hic perfectus est vir potens etiam freno circumducere totum corpus
For in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body.
3 : si autem equorum frenos in ora mittimus ad consentiendum nobis et omne corpus illorum circumferimus
Behold, we put bits in the horses' mouths, that they may obey us; and we turn about their whole body.
4 : ecce et naves cum magnae sint et a ventis validis minentur circumferuntur a modico gubernaculo ubi impetus dirigentis voluerit
Behold also the ships, which though they be so great, and are driven of fierce winds, yet are they turned about with a very small helm, whithersoever the governor listeth.
5 : ita et lingua modicum quidem membrum est et magna exultat ecce quantus ignis quam magnam silvam incendit
Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth!
6 : et lingua ignis est universitas iniquitatis lingua constituitur in membris nostris quae maculat totum corpus et inflammat rotam nativitatis nostrae inflammata a gehenna
And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell.
7 : omnis enim natura bestiarum et volucrum et serpentium etiam ceterorum domantur et domita sunt a natura humana
For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed of mankind:
8 : linguam autem nullus hominum domare potest inquietum malum plena veneno mortifero
But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.
9 : in ipsa benedicimus Dominum et Patrem et in ipsa maledicimus homines qui ad similitudinem Dei facti sunt
Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God.
10 : ex ipso ore procedit benedictio et maledictio non oportet fratres mei haec ita fieri
Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.
11 : numquid fons de eodem foramine emanat dulcem et amaram aquam
Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and bitter?
12 : numquid potest fratres mei ficus olivas facere aut vitis ficus sic neque salsa dulcem potest facere aquam
Can the fig tree, my brethren, bear olive berries? either a vine, figs? so can no fountain both yield salt water and fresh.
13 : quis sapiens et disciplinatus inter vos ostendat ex bona conversatione operationem suam in mansuetudine sapientiae
Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him shew out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom.
14 : quod si zelum amarum habetis et contentiones in cordibus vestris nolite gloriari et mendaces esse adversus veritatem
But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth.
15 : non est ista sapientia desursum descendens sed terrena animalis diabolica
This wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish.
16 : ubi enim zelus et contentio ibi inconstantia et omne opus pravum
For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work.
17 : quae autem desursum est sapientia primum quidem pudica est deinde pacifica modesta suadibilis plena misericordia et fructibus bonis non iudicans sine simulatione
But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.
18 : fructus autem iustitiae in pace seminatur facientibus pacem
And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace.

1 : unde bella et lites in vobis nonne hinc ex concupiscentiis vestris quae militant in membris vestris
From whence come wars and fightings among you? come they not hence, even of your lusts that war in your members?
2 : concupiscitis et non habetis occiditis et zelatis et non potestis adipisci litigatis et belligeratis non habetis propter quod non postulatis
Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not.
3 : petitis et non accipitis eo quod male petatis ut in concupiscentiis vestris insumatis
Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts.
4 : adulteri nescitis quia amicitia huius mundi inimica est Dei quicumque ergo voluerit amicus esse saeculi huius inimicus Dei constituitur
Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.
5 : aut putatis quia inaniter scriptura dicat ad invidiam concupiscit Spiritus qui inhabitat in nobis
Do ye think that the scripture saith in vain, The spirit that dwelleth in us lusteth to envy?
6 : maiorem autem dat gratiam propter quod dicit Deus superbis resistit humilibus autem dat gratiam
But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.
7 : subditi igitur estote Deo resistite autem diabolo et fugiet a vobis
Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
8 : adpropiate Domino et adpropinquabit vobis emundate manus peccatores et purificate corda duplices animo
Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.
9 : miseri estote et lugete et plorate risus vester in luctum convertatur et gaudium in maerorem
Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness.
10 : humiliamini in conspectu Domini et exaltabit vos
Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.
11 : nolite detrahere de alterutrum fratres qui detrahit fratri aut qui iudicat fratrem suum detrahit legi et iudicat legem si autem iudicas legem non es factor legis sed iudex
Speak not evil one of another, brethren. He that speaketh evil of his brother, and judgeth his brother, speaketh evil of the law, and judgeth the law: but if thou judge the law, thou art not a doer of the law, but a judge.
12 : unus est legislator et iudex qui potest perdere et liberare tu autem quis es qui iudicas proximum
There is one lawgiver, who is able to save and to destroy: who art thou that judgest another?
13 : ecce nunc qui dicitis hodie aut crastino ibimus in illam civitatem et faciemus quidem ibi annum et mercabimur et lucrum faciemus
Go to now, ye that say, To day or to morrow we will go into such a city, and continue there a year, and buy and sell, and get gain:
14 : qui ignoratis quid erit in crastinum quae enim est vita vestra vapor est ad modicum parens deinceps exterminatur
Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.
15 : pro eo ut dicatis si Dominus voluerit et vixerimus faciemus hoc aut illud
For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that.
16 : nunc autem exultatis in superbiis vestris omnis exultatio talis maligna est
But now ye rejoice in your boastings: all such rejoicing is evil.
17 : scienti igitur bonum facere et non facienti peccatum est illi
Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.

1 : age nunc divites plorate ululantes in miseriis quae advenient vobis
Go to now, ye rich men, weep and howl for your miseries that shall come upon you.
2 : divitiae vestrae putrefactae sunt et vestimenta vestra a tineis comesta sunt
Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are motheaten.
3 : aurum et argentum vestrum eruginavit et erugo eorum in testimonium vobis erit et manducabit carnes vestras sicut ignis thesaurizastis in novissimis diebus
Your gold and silver is cankered; and the rust of them shall be a witness against you, and shall eat your flesh as it were fire. Ye have heaped treasure together for the last days.
4 : ecce merces operariorum qui messuerunt regiones vestras qui fraudatus est a vobis clamat et clamor ipsorum in aures Domini Sabaoth introiit
Behold, the hire of the labourers who have reaped down your fields, which is of you kept back by fraud, crieth: and the cries of them which have reaped are entered into the ears of the Lord of sabaoth.
5 : epulati estis super terram et in luxuriis enutristis corda vestra in die occisionis
Ye have lived in pleasure on the earth, and been wanton; ye have nourished your hearts, as in a day of slaughter.
6 : addixistis occidistis iustum non resistit vobis
Ye have condemned and killed the just; and he doth not resist you.
7 : patientes igitur estote fratres usque ad adventum Domini ecce agricola expectat pretiosum fructum terrae patienter ferens donec accipiat temporivum et serotinum
Be patient therefore, brethren, unto the coming of the Lord. Behold, the husbandman waiteth for the precious fruit of the earth, and hath long patience for it, until he receive the early and latter rain.
8 : patientes estote et vos confirmate corda vestra quoniam adventus Domini adpropinquavit
Be ye also patient; stablish your hearts: for the coming of the Lord draweth nigh.
9 : nolite ingemescere fratres in alterutrum ut non iudicemini ecce iudex ante ianuam adsistit
Grudge not one against another, brethren, lest ye be condemned: behold, the judge standeth before the door.
10 : exemplum accipite fratres laboris et patientiae prophetas qui locuti sunt in nomine Domini
Take, my brethren, the prophets, who have spoken in the name of the Lord, for an example of suffering affliction, and of patience.
11 : ecce beatificamus qui sustinuerunt sufferentiam Iob audistis et finem Domini vidistis quoniam misericors est Dominus et miserator
Behold, we count them happy which endure. Ye have heard of the patience of Job, and have seen the end of the Lord; that the Lord is very pitiful, and of tender mercy.
12 : ante omnia autem fratres mei nolite iurare neque per caelum neque per terram neque aliud quodcumque iuramentum sit autem vestrum est est non non uti non sub iudicio decidatis
But above all things, my brethren, swear not, neither by heaven, neither by the earth, neither by any other oath: but let your yea be yea; and your nay, nay; lest ye fall into condemnation.
13 : tristatur aliquis vestrum oret aequo animo est psallat
Is any among you afflicted? let him pray. Is any merry? let him sing psalms.
14 : infirmatur quis in vobis inducat presbyteros ecclesiae et orent super eum unguentes eum oleo in nomine Domini
Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord:
15 : et oratio fidei salvabit infirmum et adlevabit eum Dominus et si in peccatis sit dimittentur ei
And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him.
16 : confitemini ergo alterutrum peccata vestra et orate pro invicem ut salvemini multum enim valet deprecatio iusti adsidua
Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.
17 : Helias homo erat similis nobis passibilis et oratione oravit ut non plueret super terram et non pluit annos tres et menses sex
Elias was a man subject to like passions as we are, and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain: and it rained not on the earth by the space of three years and six months.
18 : et rursum oravit et caelum dedit pluviam et terra dedit fructum suum
And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth brought forth her fruit.
19 : fratres mei si quis ex vobis erraverit a veritate et converterit quis eum
Brethren, if any of you do err from the truth, and one convert him;
20 : scire debet quoniam qui converti fecerit peccatorem ab errore viae suae salvabit animam eius a morte et operit multitudinem peccatorum
Let him know, that he which converteth the sinner from the error of his way shall save a soul from death, and shall hide a multitude of sins.

I Petrus

1

1 : Petrus apostolus Iesu Christi electis advenis dispersionis Ponti Galatiae Cappadociae Asiae et Bithyniae
Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, to the strangers scattered throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia,
2 : secundum praescientiam Dei Patris in sanctificatione Spiritus in oboedientiam et aspersionem sanguinis Iesu Christi gratia vobis et pax multiplicetur
Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit, unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace unto you, and peace, be multiplied.
3 : benedictus Deus et Pater Domini nostri Iesu Christi qui secundum magnam misericordiam suam regeneravit nos in spem vivam per resurrectionem Iesu Christi ex mortuis
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
4 : in hereditatem incorruptibilem et incontaminatam et inmarcescibilem conservatam in caelis in vobis
To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you,
5 : qui in virtute Dei custodimini per fidem in salutem paratam revelari in tempore novissimo
Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.
6 : in quo exultatis modicum nunc si oportet contristati in variis temptationibus
Wherein ye greatly rejoice, though now for a season, if need be, ye are in heaviness through manifold temptations:
7 : ut probatum vestrae fidei multo pretiosius sit auro quod perit per ignem probato inveniatur in laudem et gloriam et honorem in revelatione Iesu Christi
That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ:
8 : quem cum non videritis diligitis in quem nunc quoque non videntes credentes autem exultatis laetitia inenarrabili et glorificata
Whom having not seen, ye love; in whom, though now ye see him not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory:
9 : reportantes finem fidei vestrae salutem animarum
Receiving the end of your faith, even the salvation of your souls.
10 : de qua salute exquisierunt atque scrutati sunt prophetae qui de futura in vobis gratia prophetaverunt
Of which salvation the prophets have enquired and searched diligently, who prophesied of the grace that should come unto you:
11 : scrutantes in quod vel quale tempus significaret in eis Spiritus Christi praenuntians eas quae in Christo sunt passiones et posteriores glorias
Searching what, or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them did signify, when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow.
12 : quibus revelatum est quia non sibi ipsis vobis autem ministrabant ea quae nunc nuntiata sunt vobis per eos qui evangelizaverunt vos Spiritu Sancto misso de caelo in quae desiderant angeli prospicere
Unto whom it was revealed, that not unto themselves, but unto us they did minister the things, which are now reported unto you by them that have preached the gospel unto you with the Holy Ghost sent down from heaven; which things the angels desire to look into.
13 : propter quod succincti lumbos mentis vestrae sobrii perfecte sperate in eam quae offertur vobis gratiam in revelatione Iesu Christi
Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ;
14 : quasi filii oboedientiae non configurati prioribus ignorantiae vestrae desideriis
As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance:
15 : sed secundum eum qui vocavit vos sanctum et ipsi sancti in omni conversatione sitis
But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation;
16 : quoniam scriptum est sancti eritis quia ego sanctus sum
Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.
17 : et si Patrem invocatis eum qui sine acceptione personarum iudicat secundum uniuscuiusque opus in timore incolatus vestri tempore conversamini
And if ye call on the Father, who without respect of persons judgeth according to every man's work, pass the time of your sojourning here in fear:
18 : scientes quod non corruptibilibus argento vel auro redempti estis de vana vestra conversatione paternae traditionis
Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers;
19 : sed pretioso sanguine quasi agni incontaminati et inmaculati Christi
But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:
20 : praecogniti quidem ante constitutionem mundi manifestati autem novissimis temporibus propter vos
Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you,
21 : qui per ipsum fideles estis in Deo qui suscitavit eum a mortuis et dedit ei gloriam ut fides vestra et spes esset in Deo
Who by him do believe in God, that raised him up from the dead, and gave him glory; that your faith and hope might be in God.
22 : animas vestras castificantes in oboedientia caritatis in fraternitatis amore simplici ex corde invicem diligite adtentius
Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently:
23 : renati non ex semine corruptibili sed incorruptibili per verbum Dei vivi et permanentis
Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.
24 : quia omnis caro ut faenum et omnis gloria eius tamquam flos faeni exaruit faenum et flos decidit
For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away:
25 : verbum autem Domini manet in aeternum hoc est autem verbum quod evangelizatum est in vos
But the word of the Lord endureth for ever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you.

Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings,
2 : sicut modo geniti infantes rationale sine dolo lac concupiscite ut in eo crescatis in salutem
As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:
3 : si gustastis quoniam dulcis Dominus
If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious.
4 : ad quem accedentes lapidem vivum ab hominibus quidem reprobatum a Deo autem electum honorificatum
To whom coming, as unto a living stone, disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God, and precious,
5 : et ipsi tamquam lapides vivi superaedificamini domus spiritalis sacerdotium sanctum offerre spiritales hostias acceptabiles Deo per Iesum Christum
Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.
6 : propter quod continet in scriptura ecce pono in Sion lapidem summum angularem electum pretiosum et qui crediderit in eo non confundetur
Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded.
7 : vobis igitur honor credentibus non credentibus autem lapis quem reprobaverunt aedificantes hic factus est in caput anguli
Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner,
8 : et lapis offensionis et petra scandali qui offendunt verbo nec credunt in quod et positi sunt
And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient: whereunto also they were appointed.
9 : vos autem genus electum regale sacerdotium gens sancta populus adquisitionis ut virtutes adnuntietis eius qui de tenebris vos vocavit in admirabile lumen suum
But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:
10 : qui aliquando non populus nunc autem populus Dei qui non consecuti misericordiam nunc autem misericordiam consecuti
Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.
11 : carissimi obsecro tamquam advenas et peregrinos abstinere vos a carnalibus desideriis quae militant adversus animam
Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul;
12 : conversationem vestram inter gentes habentes bonam ut in eo quod detractant de vobis tamquam de malefactoribus ex bonis operibus considerantes glorificent Deum in die visitationis
Having your conversation honest among the Gentiles: that, whereas they speak against you as evildoers, they may by your good works, which they shall behold, glorify God in the day of visitation.
13 : subiecti estote omni humanae creaturae propter Dominum sive regi quasi praecellenti
Submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord's sake: whether it be to the king, as supreme;
14 : sive ducibus tamquam ab eo missis ad vindictam malefactorum laudem vero bonorum
Or unto governors, as unto them that are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers, and for the praise of them that do well.
15 : quia sic est voluntas Dei ut benefacientes obmutescere faciatis inprudentium hominum ignorantiam
For so is the will of God, that with well doing ye may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men:
16 : quasi liberi et non quasi velamen habentes malitiae libertatem sed sicut servi Dei
As free, and not using your liberty for a cloke of maliciousness, but as the servants of God.
17 : omnes honorate fraternitatem diligite Deum timete regem honorificate
Honour all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honour the king.
18 : servi subditi in omni timore dominis non tantum bonis et modestis sed etiam discolis
Servants, be subject to your masters with all fear; not only to the good and gentle, but also to the froward.
19 : haec est enim gratia si propter conscientiam Dei sustinet quis tristitias patiens iniuste
For this is thankworthy, if a man for conscience toward God endure grief, suffering wrongfully.
20 : quae enim gloria est si peccantes et colaphizati suffertis sed si benefacientes et patientes sustinetis haec est gratia apud Deum
For what glory is it, if, when ye be buffeted for your faults, ye shall take it patiently? but if, when ye do well, and suffer for it, ye take it patiently, this is acceptable with God.
21 : in hoc enim vocati estis quia et Christus passus est pro vobis vobis relinquens exemplum ut sequamini vestigia eius
For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps:
22 : qui peccatum non fecit nec inventus est dolus in ore ipsius
Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth:
23 : qui cum malediceretur non maledicebat cum pateretur non comminabatur tradebat autem iudicanti se iniuste
Who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, he threatened not; but committed himself to him that judgeth righteously:
24 : qui peccata nostra ipse pertulit in corpore suo super lignum ut peccatis mortui iustitiae viveremus cuius livore sanati estis
Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.
25 : eratis enim sicut oves errantes sed conversi estis nunc ad pastorem et episcopum animarum vestrarum
For ye were as sheep going astray; but are now returned unto the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls.

1 : similiter mulieres subditae suis viris ut et si qui non credunt verbo per mulierum conversationem sine verbo lucri fiant
Likewise, ye wives, be in subjection to your own husbands; that, if any obey not the word, they also may without the word be won by the conversation of the wives;
2 : considerantes in timore castam conversationem vestram
While they behold your chaste conversation coupled with fear.
3 : quarum sit non extrinsecus capillaturae aut circumdatio auri aut indumenti vestimentorum cultus
Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel;
4 : sed qui absconditus cordis est homo in incorruptibilitate quieti et modesti spiritus quod est in conspectu Dei locuples
But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.
5 : sic enim aliquando et sanctae mulieres sperantes in Deo ornabant se subiectae propriis viris
For after this manner in the old time the holy women also, who trusted in God, adorned themselves, being in subjection unto their own husbands:
6 : sicut Sarra oboediebat Abrahae dominum eum vocans cuius estis filiae benefacientes et non timentes ullam perturbationem
Even as Sara obeyed Abraham, calling him lord: whose daughters ye are, as long as ye do well, and are not afraid with any amazement.
7 : viri similiter cohabitantes secundum scientiam quasi infirmiori vaso muliebri inpertientes honorem tamquam et coheredibus gratiae vitae uti ne inpediantur orationes vestrae
Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge, giving honour unto the wife, as unto the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life; that your prayers be not hindered.
8 : in fine autem omnes unianimes conpatientes fraternitatis amatores misericordes humiles
Finally, be ye all of one mind, having compassion one of another, love as brethren, be pitiful, be courteous:
9 : non reddentes malum pro malo vel maledictum pro maledicto sed e contrario benedicentes quia in hoc vocati estis ut benedictionem hereditate possideatis
Not rendering evil for evil, or railing for railing: but contrariwise blessing; knowing that ye are thereunto called, that ye should inherit a blessing.
10 : qui enim vult vitam diligere et videre dies bonos coerceat linguam suam a malo et labia eius ne loquantur dolum
For he that will love life, and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips that they speak no guile:
11 : declinet autem a malo et faciat bonum inquirat pacem et persequatur eam
Let him eschew evil, and do good; let him seek peace, and ensue it.
12 : quia oculi Domini super iustos et aures eius in preces eorum vultus autem Domini super facientes mala
For the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and his ears are open unto their prayers: but the face of the Lord is against them that do evil.
13 : et quis est qui vobis noceat si boni aemulatores fueritis
And who is he that will harm you, if ye be followers of that which is good?
14 : sed et si quid patimini propter iustitiam beati timorem autem eorum ne timueritis et non conturbemini
But and if ye suffer for righteousness' sake, happy are ye: and be not afraid of their terror, neither be troubled;
15 : Dominum autem Christum sanctificate in cordibus vestris parati semper ad satisfactionem omni poscenti vos rationem de ea quae in vobis est spe
But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear:
16 : sed cum modestia et timore conscientiam habentes bonam ut in eo quod detrahunt vobis confundantur qui calumniantur vestram bonam in Christo conversationem
Having a good conscience; that, whereas they speak evil of you, as of evildoers, they may be ashamed that falsely accuse your good conversation in Christ.
17 : melius est enim benefacientes si velit voluntas Dei pati quam malefacientes
For it is better, if the will of God be so, that ye suffer for well doing, than for evil doing.
18 : quia et Christus semel pro peccatis mortuus est iustus pro iniustis ut nos offerret Deo mortificatus carne vivificatus autem spiritu
For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:
19 : in quo et his qui in carcere erant spiritibus veniens praedicavit
By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison;
20 : qui increduli fuerant aliquando quando expectabat Dei patientia in diebus Noe cum fabricaretur arca in qua pauci id est octo animae salvae factae sunt per aquam
Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water.
21 : quod et vos nunc similis formae salvos facit baptisma non carnis depositio sordium sed conscientiae bonae interrogatio in Deum per resurrectionem Iesu Christi
The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ:
22 : qui est in dextera Dei profectus in caelum subiectis sibi angelis et potestatibus et virtutibus
Who is gone into heaven, and is on the right hand of God; angels and authorities and powers being made subject unto him.

1 : Christo igitur passo in carne et vos eadem cogitatione armamini quia qui passus est carne desiit a peccatis
Forasmuch then as Christ hath suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves likewise with the same mind: for he that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sin;
2 : ut iam non hominum desideriis sed voluntate Dei quod reliquum est in carne vivat temporis
That he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh to the lusts of men, but to the will of God.
3 : sufficit enim praeteritum tempus ad voluntatem gentium consummandam qui ambulaverunt in luxuriis desideriis vinolentiis comesationibus potationibus et inlicitis idolorum cultibus
For the time past of our life may suffice us to have wrought the will of the Gentiles, when we walked in lasciviousness, lusts, excess of wine, revellings, banquetings, and abominable idolatries:
4 : in quo peregrinantur non concurrentibus vobis in eandem luxuriae confusionem blasphemantes
Wherein they think it strange that ye run not with them to the same excess of riot, speaking evil of you:
5 : qui reddent rationem ei qui paratus est iudicare vivos et mortuos
Who shall give account to him that is ready to judge the quick and the dead.
6 : propter hoc enim et mortuis evangelizatum est ut iudicentur quidem secundum homines in carne vivant autem secundum Deum spiritu
For for this cause was the gospel preached also to them that are dead, that they might be judged according to men in the flesh, but live according to God in the spirit.
7 : omnium autem finis adpropinquavit estote itaque prudentes et vigilate in orationibus
But the end of all things is at hand: be ye therefore sober, and watch unto prayer.
8 : ante omnia mutuam in vosmet ipsos caritatem continuam habentes quia caritas operit multitudinem peccatorum
And above all things have fervent charity among yourselves: for charity shall cover the multitude of sins.
9 : hospitales invicem sine murmuratione
Use hospitality one to another without grudging.
10 : unusquisque sicut accepit gratiam in alterutrum illam administrantes sicut boni dispensatores multiformis gratiae Dei
As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.
11 : si quis loquitur quasi sermones Dei si quis ministrat tamquam ex virtute quam administrat Deus ut in omnibus honorificetur Deus per Iesum Christum cui est gloria et imperium in saecula saeculorum amen
If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God; if any man minister, let him do it as of the ability which God giveth: that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom be praise and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.
12 : carissimi nolite peregrinari in fervore qui ad temptationem vobis fit quasi novi aliquid vobis contingat
Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you:
13 : sed communicantes Christi passionibus gaudete ut et in revelatione gloriae eius gaudeatis exultantes
But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ's sufferings; that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy.
14 : si exprobramini in nomine Christi beati quoniam gloriae Dei Spiritus in vobis requiescit
If ye be reproached for the name of Christ, happy are ye; for the spirit of glory and of God resteth upon you: on their part he is evil spoken of, but on your part he is glorified.
15 : nemo enim vestrum patiatur quasi homicida aut fur aut maledicus aut alienorum appetitor
But let none of you suffer as a murderer, or as a thief, or as an evildoer, or as a busybody in other men's matters.
16 : si autem ut Christianus non erubescat glorificet autem Deum in isto nomine
Yet if any man suffer as a Christian, let him not be ashamed; but let him glorify God on this behalf.
17 : quoniam tempus ut incipiat iudicium de domo Dei si autem primum a nobis qui finis eorum qui non credunt Dei evangelio
For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God?
18 : et si iustus vix salvatur impius et peccator ubi parebit
And if the righteous scarcely be saved, where shall the ungodly and the sinner appear?
19 : itaque et hii qui patiuntur secundum voluntatem Dei fideli creatori commendant animas suas in benefactis
Wherefore let them that suffer according to the will of God commit the keeping of their souls to him in well doing, as unto a faithful Creator.

1 : seniores ergo qui in vobis sunt obsecro consenior et testis Christi passionum qui et eius quae in futuro revelanda est gloriae communicator
The elders which are among you I exhort, who am also an elder, and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that shall be revealed:
2 : pascite qui est in vobis gregem Dei providentes non coacto sed spontanee secundum Deum neque turpis lucri gratia sed voluntarie
Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind;
3 : neque ut dominantes in cleris sed formae facti gregi et ex animo
Neither as being lords over God's heritage, but being ensamples to the flock.
4 : et cum apparuerit princeps pastorum percipietis inmarcescibilem gloriae coronam
And when the chief Shepherd shall appear, ye shall receive a crown of glory that fadeth not away.
5 : similiter adulescentes subditi estote senioribus omnes autem invicem humilitatem insinuate quia Deus superbis resistit humilibus autem dat gratiam
Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble.
6 : humiliamini igitur sub potenti manu Dei ut vos exaltet in tempore visitationis
Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time:
7 : omnem sollicitudinem vestram proicientes in eum quoniam ipsi cura est de vobis
Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.
8 : sobrii estote vigilate quia adversarius vester diabolus tamquam leo rugiens circuit quaerens quem devoret
Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:
9 : cui resistite fortes fide scientes eadem passionum ei quae in mundo est vestrae fraternitati fieri
Whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world.
10 : Deus autem omnis gratiae qui vocavit nos in aeternam suam gloriam in Christo Iesu modicum passos ipse perficiet confirmabit solidabit
But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you.
11 : ipsi imperium in saecula saeculorum amen
To him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.
12 : per Silvanum vobis fidelem fratrem ut arbitror breviter scripsi obsecrans et contestans hanc esse veram gratiam Dei in qua state
By Silvanus, a faithful brother unto you, as I suppose, I have written briefly, exhorting, and testifying that this is the true grace of God wherein ye stand.
13 : salutat vos quae est in Babylone cumelecta et Marcus filius meus
The church that is at Babylon, elected together with you, saluteth you; and so doth Marcus my son.
14 : salutate invicem in osculo sancto gratia vobis omnibus qui estis in Christo
Greet ye one another with a kiss of charity. Peace be with you all that are in Christ Jesus. Amen.

II Petrus

1

1 : Simon Petrus servus et apostolus Iesu Christi his qui coaequalem nobis sortiti sunt fidem in iustitia Dei nostri et salvatoris Iesu Christi
Simon Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ, to them that have obtained like precious faith with us through the righteousness of God and our Saviour Jesus Christ:
2 : gratia vobis et pax adimpleatur in cognitione Domini nostri
Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord,
3 : quomodo omnia nobis divinae virtutis suae quae ad vitam et pietatem donata est per cognitionem eius qui vocavit nos propria gloria et virtute
According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:
4 : per quae maxima et pretiosa nobis promissa donavit ut per haec efficiamini divinae consortes naturae fugientes eius quae in mundo est concupiscentiae corruptionem
Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.
5 : vos autem curam omnem subinferentes ministrate in fide vestra virtutem in virtute autem scientiam
And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge;
6 : in scientia autem abstinentiam in abstinentia autem patientiam in patientia autem pietatem
And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness;
7 : in pietate autem amorem fraternitatis in amore autem fraternitatis caritatem
And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity.
8 : haec enim vobis cum adsint et superent non vacuos nec sine fructu vos constituent in Domini nostri Iesu Christi cognitione
For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
9 : cui enim non praesto sunt haec caecus est et manu temptans oblivionem accipiens purgationis veterum suorum delictorum
But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins.
10 : quapropter fratres magis satagite ut per bona opera certam vestram vocationem et electionem faciatis haec enim facientes non peccabitis aliquando
Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall:
11 : sic enim abundanter ministrabitur vobis introitus in aeternum regnum Domini nostri et salvatoris Iesu Christi
For so an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
12 : propter quod incipiam vos semper commonere de his et quidem scientes et confirmatos in praesenti veritate
Wherefore I will not be negligent to put you always in remembrance of these things, though ye know them, and be established in the present truth.
13 : iustum autem arbitror quamdiu sum in hoc tabernaculo suscitare vos in commonitione
Yea, I think it meet, as long as I am in this tabernacle, to stir you up by putting you in remembrance;
14 : certus quod velox est depositio tabernaculi mei secundum quod et Dominus noster Iesus Christus significavit mihi
Knowing that shortly I must put off this my tabernacle, even as our Lord Jesus Christ hath shewed me.
15 : dabo autem operam et frequenter habere vos post obitum meum ut horum memoriam faciatis
Moreover I will endeavour that ye may be able after my decease to have these things always in remembrance.
16 : non enim doctas fabulas secuti notam fecimus vobis Domini nostri Iesu Christi virtutem et praesentiam sed speculatores facti illius magnitudinis
For we have not followed cunningly devised fables, when we made known unto you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of his majesty.
17 : accipiens enim a Deo Patre honorem et gloriam voce delapsa ad eum huiuscemodi a magnifica gloria hic est Filius meus dilectus in quo mihi conplacui
For he received from God the Father honour and glory, when there came such a voice to him from the excellent glory, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
18 : et hanc vocem nos audivimus de caelo adlatam cum essemus cum ipso in monte sancto
And this voice which came from heaven we heard, when we were with him in the holy mount.
19 : et habemus firmiorem propheticum sermonem cui bene facitis adtendentes quasi lucernae lucenti in caliginoso loco donec dies inlucescat et lucifer oriatur in cordibus vestris
We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts:
20 : hoc primum intellegentes quod omnis prophetia scripturae propria interpretatione non fit
Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.
21 : non enim voluntate humana adlata est aliquando prophetia sed Spiritu Sancto inspirati locuti sunt sancti Dei homines
For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.

1 : fuerunt vero et pseudoprophetae in populo sicut et in vobis erunt magistri mendaces qui introducent sectas perditionis et eum qui emit eos Dominum negant superducentes sibi celerem perditionem
But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction.
2 : et multi sequentur eorum luxurias per quos via veritatis blasphemabitur
And many shall follow their pernicious ways; by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of.
3 : et in avaritia fictis verbis de vobis negotiabuntur quibus iudicium iam olim non cessat et perditio eorum non dormitat
And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you: whose judgment now of a long time lingereth not, and their damnation slumbereth not.
4 : si enim Deus angelis peccantibus non pepercit sed rudentibus inferni detractos in tartarum tradidit in iudicium cruciatos reservari
For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment;
5 : et originali mundo non pepercit sed octavum Noe iustitiae praeconem custodivit diluvium mundo impiorum inducens
And spared not the old world, but saved Noah the eighth person, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood upon the world of the ungodly;
6 : et civitates Sodomorum et Gomorraeorum in cinerem redigens eversione damnavit exemplum eorum qui impie acturi sunt ponens
And turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrha into ashes condemned them with an overthrow, making them an ensample unto those that after should live ungodly;
7 : et iustum Loth oppressum a nefandorum iniuria conversatione eruit
And delivered just Lot, vexed with the filthy conversation of the wicked:
8 : aspectu enim et auditu iustus erat habitans apud eos qui diem de die animam iustam iniquis operibus cruciabant
For that righteous man dwelling among them, in seeing and hearing, vexed his righteous soul from day to day with their unlawful deeds;)
9 : novit Dominus pios de temptatione eripere iniquos vero in diem iudicii cruciandos reservare
The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations, and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished:
10 : magis autem eos qui post carnem in concupiscentia inmunditiae ambulant dominationemque contemnunt audaces sibi placentes sectas non metuunt blasphemantes
But chiefly them that walk after the flesh in the lust of uncleanness, and despise government. Presumptuous are they, selfwilled, they are not afraid to speak evil of dignities.
11 : ubi angeli fortitudine et virtute cum sint maiores non portant adversum se execrabile iudicium
Whereas angels, which are greater in power and might, bring not railing accusation against them before the Lord.
12 : hii vero velut inrationabilia pecora naturaliter in captionem et in perniciem in his quae ignorant blasphemantes in corruptione sua et peribunt
But these, as natural brute beasts, made to be taken and destroyed, speak evil of the things that they understand not; and shall utterly perish in their own corruption;
13 : percipientes mercedem iniustitiae voluptatem existimantes diei delicias coinquinationes et maculae deliciis affluentes in conviviis suis luxuriantes vobiscum
And shall receive the reward of unrighteousness, as they that count it pleasure to riot in the day time. Spots they are and blemishes, sporting themselves with their own deceivings while they feast with you;
14 : oculos habentes plenos adulterio et incessabiles delicti pellicentes animas instabiles cor exercitatum avaritiae habentes maledictionis filii
Having eyes full of adultery, and that cannot cease from sin; beguiling unstable souls: an heart they have exercised with covetous practices; cursed children:
15 : derelinquentes rectam viam erraverunt secuti viam Balaam ex Bosor qui mercedem iniquitatis amavit
Which have forsaken the right way, and are gone astray, following the way of Balaam the son of Bosor, who loved the wages of unrighteousness;
16 : correptionem vero habuit suae vesaniae subiugale mutum in hominis voce loquens prohibuit prophetae insipientiam
But was rebuked for his iniquity: the dumb ass speaking with man's voice forbad the madness of the prophet.
17 : hii sunt fontes sine aqua et nebulae turbinibus exagitatae quibus caligo tenebrarum reservatur
These are wells without water, clouds that are carried with a tempest; to whom the mist of darkness is reserved for ever.
18 : superba enim vanitatis loquentes pellicent in desideriis carnis luxuriae eos qui paululum effugiunt qui in errore conversantur
For when they speak great swelling words of vanity, they allure through the lusts of the flesh, through much wantonness, those that were clean escaped from them who live in error.
19 : libertatem illis promittentes cum ipsi servi sint corruptionis a quo enim quis superatus est huius et servus est
While they promise them liberty, they themselves are the servants of corruption: for of whom a man is overcome, of the same is he brought in bondage.
20 : si enim refugientes coinquinationes mundi in cognitione Domini nostri et salvatoris Iesu Christi his rursus inpliciti superantur facta sunt eis posteriora deteriora prioribus
For if after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein, and overcome, the latter end is worse with them than the beginning.
21 : melius enim erat illis non cognoscere viam iustitiae quam post agnitionem retrorsum converti ab eo quod illis traditum est sancto mandato
For it had been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after they have known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered unto them.
22 : contigit enim eis illud veri proverbii canis reversus ad suum vomitum et sus lota in volutabro luti
But it is happened unto them according to the true proverb, The dog is turned to his own vomit again; and the sow that was washed to her wallowing in the mire.

1 : hanc ecce vobis carissimi secundam scribo epistulam in quibus excito vestram in commonitione sinceram mentem
This second epistle, beloved, I now write unto you; in both which I stir up your pure minds by way of remembrance:
2 : ut memores sitis eorum quae praedixi verborum a sanctis prophetis et apostolorum vestrorum praeceptorum Domini et salvatoris
That ye may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us the apostles of the Lord and Saviour:
3 : hoc primum scientes quod venient in novissimis diebus in deceptione inlusores iuxta proprias concupiscentias ambulantes
Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts,
4 : dicentes ubi est promissio aut adventus eius ex quo enim patres dormierunt omnia sic perseverant ab initio creaturae
And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation.
5 : latet enim eos hoc volentes quod caeli erant prius et terra de aqua et per aquam consistens Dei verbo
For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water:
6 : per quae ille tunc mundus aqua inundatus periit
Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished:
7 : caeli autem qui nunc sunt et terra eodem verbo repositi sunt igni servati in diem iudicii et perditionis impiorum hominum
But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.
8 : unum vero hoc non lateat vos carissimi quia unus dies apud Dominum sicut mille anni et mille anni sicut dies unus
But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.
9 : non tardat Dominus promissi sed patienter agit propter vos nolens aliquos perire sed omnes ad paenitentiam reverti
The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
10 : adveniet autem dies Domini ut fur in qua caeli magno impetu transient elementa vero calore solventur
But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.
11 : cum haec igitur omnia dissolvenda sint quales oportet esse vos in sanctis conversationibus et pietatibus
Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness,
12 : expectantes et properantes in adventum Dei diei per quam caeli ardentes solventur et elementa ignis ardore tabescent
Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?
13 : novos vero caelos et novam terram et promissa ipsius expectamus in quibus iustitia habitat
Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.
14 : propter quod carissimi haec expectantes satis agite inmaculati et inviolati ei inveniri in pace
Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless.
15 : et Domini nostri longanimitatem salutem arbitramini sicut et carissimus frater noster Paulus secundum datam sibi sapientiam scripsit vobis
And account that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also according to the wisdom given unto him hath written unto you;
16 : sicut et in omnibus epistulis loquens in eis de his in quibus sunt quaedam difficilia intellectu quae indocti et instabiles depravant sicut et ceteras scripturas ad suam ipsorum perditionem
As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction.
17 : vos igitur fratres praescientes custodite ne insipientium errore transducti excidatis a propria firmitate
Ye therefore, beloved, seeing ye know these things before, beware lest ye also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own stedfastness.
18 : crescite vero in gratia et in cognitione Domini nostri et salvatoris Iesu Christi ipsi gloria et nunc et in die aeternitatis amen
But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.

1

1 : quod fuit ab initio quod audivimus quod vidimus oculis nostris quod perspeximus et manus nostrae temptaverunt de verbo vitae
That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life;
2 : et vita manifestata est et vidimus et testamur et adnuntiamus vobis vitam aeternam quae erat apud Patrem et apparuit nobis
For the life was manifested, and we have seen it, and bear witness, and shew unto you that eternal life, which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us;)
3 : quod vidimus et audivimus adnuntiamus et vobis ut et vos societatem habeatis nobiscum et societas nostra sit cum Patre et cum Filio eius Iesu Christo
That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ.
4 : et haec scribimus vobis ut gaudium nostrum sit plenum
And these things write we unto you, that your joy may be full.
5 : et haec est adnuntiatio quam audivimus ab eo et adnuntiamus vobis quoniam Deus lux est et tenebrae in eo non sunt ullae
This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.
6 : si dixerimus quoniam societatem habemus cum eo et in tenebris ambulamus mentimur et non facimus veritatem
If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth:
7 : si autem in luce ambulemus sicut et ipse est in luce societatem habemus ad invicem et sanguis Iesu Filii eius mundat nos ab omni peccato
But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.
8 : si dixerimus quoniam peccatum non habemus ipsi nos seducimus et veritas in nobis non est
If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
9 : si confiteamur peccata nostra fidelis est et iustus ut remittat nobis peccata et emundet nos ab omni iniquitate
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
10 : si dixerimus quoniam non peccavimus mendacem facimus eum et verbum eius non est in nobis
If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

1 : filioli mei haec scribo vobis ut non peccetis sed et si quis peccaverit advocatum habemus apud Patrem Iesum Christum iustum
My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:
2 : et ipse est propitiatio pro peccatis nostris non pro nostris autem tantum sed etiam pro totius mundi
And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.
3 : et in hoc scimus quoniam cognovimus eum si mandata eius observemus
And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments.
4 : qui dicit se nosse eum et mandata eius non custodit mendax est in hoc veritas non est
He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.
5 : qui autem servat verbum eius vere in hoc caritas Dei perfecta est in hoc scimus quoniam in ipso sumus
But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him.
6 : qui dicit se in ipso manere debet sicut ille ambulavit et ipse ambulare
He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.
7 : carissimi non mandatum novum scribo vobis sed mandatum vetus quod habuistis ab initio mandatum vetus est verbum quod audistis
Brethren, I write no new commandment unto you, but an old commandment which ye had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word which ye have heard from the beginning.
8 : iterum mandatum novum scribo vobis quod est verum et in ipso et in vobis quoniam tenebrae transeunt et lumen verum iam lucet
Again, a new commandment I write unto you, which thing is true in him and in you: because the darkness is past, and the true light now shineth.
9 : qui dicit se in luce esse et fratrem suum odit in tenebris est usque adhuc
He that saith he is in the light, and hateth his brother, is in darkness even until now.
10 : qui diligit fratrem suum in lumine manet et scandalum in eo non est
He that loveth his brother abideth in the light, and there is none occasion of stumbling in him.
11 : qui autem odit fratrem suum in tenebris est et in tenebris ambulat et nescit quo eat quoniam tenebrae obcaecaverunt oculos eius
But he that hateth his brother is in darkness, and walketh in darkness, and knoweth not whither he goeth, because that darkness hath blinded his eyes.
12 : scribo vobis filioli quoniam remittuntur vobis peccata propter nomen eius
I write unto you, little children, because your sins are forgiven you for his name's sake.
13 : scribo vobis patres quoniam cognovistis eum qui ab initio est scribo vobis adulescentes quoniam vicistis malignum
I write unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning. I write unto you, young men, because ye have overcome the wicked one. I write unto you, little children, because ye have known the Father.

I have written unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning. I have written unto you, young men, because ye are strong, and the word of God abideth in you, and ye have overcome the wicked one.
15 : nolite diligere mundum neque ea quae in mundo sunt si quis diligit mundum non est caritas Patris in eo
Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
16 : quoniam omne quod est in mundo concupiscentia carnis et concupiscentia oculorum est et superbia vitae quae non est ex Patre sed ex mundo est
For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.
17 : et mundus transit et concupiscentia eius qui autem facit voluntatem Dei manet in aeternum
And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.
18 : filioli novissima hora est et sicut audistis quia antichristus venit nunc antichristi multi facti sunt unde scimus quoniam novissima hora est
Little children, it is the last time: and as ye have heard that antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrists; whereby we know that it is the last time.
19 : ex nobis prodierunt sed non erant ex nobis nam si fuissent ex nobis permansissent utique nobiscum sed ut manifesti sint quoniam non sunt omnes ex nobis
They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us.
20 : sed vos unctionem habetis a Sancto et nostis omnia
But ye have an unction from the Holy One, and ye know all things.
21 : non scripsi vobis quasi ignorantibus veritatem sed quasi scientibus eam et quoniam omne mendacium ex veritate non est
I have not written unto you because ye know not the truth, but because ye know it, and that no lie is of the truth.
22 : quis est mendax nisi is qui negat quoniam Iesus non est Christus hic est antichristus qui negat Patrem et Filium
Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son.
23 : omnis qui negat Filium nec Patrem habet qui confitetur Filium et Patrem habet
Whosoever denieth the Son, the same hath not the Father: (but) he that acknowledgeth the Son hath the Father also.
24 : vos quod audistis ab initio in vobis permaneat si in vobis permanserit quod ab initio audistis et vos in Filio et Patre manebitis
Let that therefore abide in you, which ye have heard from the beginning. If that which ye have heard from the beginning shall remain in you, ye also shall continue in the Son, and in the Father.
25 : et haec est repromissio quam ipse pollicitus est nobis vitam aeternam
And this is the promise that he hath promised us, even eternal life.
26 : haec scripsi vobis de eis qui seducunt vos
These things have I written unto you concerning them that seduce you.
27 : et vos unctionem quam accepistis ab eo manet in vobis et non necesse habetis ut aliquis doceat vos sed sicut unctio eius docet vos de omnibus et verum est et non est mendacium et sicut docuit vos manete in eo
But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him.
28 : et nunc filioli manete in eo ut cum apparuerit habeamus fiduciam et non confundamur ab eo in adventu eius
And now, little children, abide in him; that, when he shall appear, we may have confidence, and not be ashamed before him at his coming.
29 : si scitis quoniam iustus est scitote quoniam et omnis qui facit iustitiam ex ipso natus est
If ye know that he is righteous, ye know that every one that doeth righteousness is born of him.

1 : videte qualem caritatem dedit nobis Pater ut filii Dei nominemur et sumus propter hoc mundus non novit nos quia non novit eum
Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.
2 : carissimi nunc filii Dei sumus et nondum apparuit quid erimus scimus quoniam cum apparuerit similes ei erimus quoniam videbimus eum sicuti est
Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.
3 : et omnis qui habet spem hanc in eo sanctificat se sicut et ille sanctus est
And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.
4 : omnis qui facit peccatum et iniquitatem facit et peccatum est iniquitas
Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.
5 : et scitis quoniam ille apparuit ut peccata tolleret et peccatum in eo non est
And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin.
6 : omnis qui in eo manet non peccat omnis qui peccat non vidit eum nec cognovit eum
Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him.
7 : filioli nemo vos seducat qui facit iustitiam iustus est sicut et ille iustus est
Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous.
8 : qui facit peccatum ex diabolo est quoniam ab initio diabolus peccat in hoc apparuit Filius Dei ut dissolvat opera diaboli
He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.
9 : omnis qui natus est ex Deo peccatum non facit quoniam semen ipsius in eo manet et non potest peccare quoniam ex Deo natus est
Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.
10 : in hoc manifesti sunt filii Dei et filii diaboli omnis qui non est iustus non est de Deo et qui non diligit fratrem suum
In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother.
11 : quoniam haec est adnuntiatio quam audistis ab initio ut diligamus alterutrum
For this is the message that ye heard from the beginning, that we should love one another.
12 : non sicut Cain ex maligno erat et occidit fratrem suum et propter quid occidit eum quoniam opera eius maligna erant fratris autem eius iusta
Not as Cain, who was of that wicked one, and slew his brother. And wherefore slew he him? Because his own works were evil, and his brother's righteous.
13 : nolite mirari fratres si odit vos mundus
Marvel not, my brethren, if the world hate you.
14 : nos scimus quoniam translati sumus de morte in vitam quoniam diligimus fratres qui non diligit manet in morte
We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother abideth in death.
15 : omnis qui odit fratrem suum homicida est et scitis quoniam omnis homicida non habet vitam aeternam in se manentem
Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him.
16 : in hoc cognovimus caritatem quoniam ille pro nobis animam suam posuit et nos debemus pro fratribus animas ponere
Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.
17 : qui habuerit substantiam mundi et viderit fratrem suum necesse habere et clauserit viscera sua ab eo quomodo caritas Dei manet in eo
But whoso hath this world's good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him?
18 : filioli non diligamus verbo nec lingua sed opere et veritate
My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.
19 : in hoc cognoscimus quoniam ex veritate sumus et in conspectu eius suadeamus corda nostra
And hereby we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before him.
20 : quoniam si reprehenderit nos cor maior est Deus corde nostro et novit omnia
For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things.
21 : carissimi si cor non reprehenderit nos fiduciam habemus ad Deum
Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, then have we confidence toward God.
22 : et quodcumque petierimus accipiemus ab eo quoniam mandata eius custodimus et ea quae sunt placita coram eo facimus
And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight.
23 : et hoc est mandatum eius ut credamus in nomine Filii eius Iesu Christi et diligamus alterutrum sicut dedit mandatum nobis
And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment.
24 : et qui servat mandata eius in illo manet et ipse in eo et in hoc scimus quoniam manet in nobis de Spiritu quem nobis dedit
And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us.

1 : carissimi nolite omni spiritui credere sed probate spiritus si ex Deo sint quoniam multi pseudoprophetae exierunt in mundum
Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.
2 : in hoc cognoscitur Spiritus Dei omnis spiritus qui confitetur Iesum Christum in carne venisse ex Deo est
Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God:
3 : et omnis spiritus qui solvit Iesum ex Deo non est et hoc est antichristi quod audistis quoniam venit et nunc iam in mundo est
And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.
4 : vos ex Deo estis filioli et vicistis eos quoniam maior est qui in vobis est quam qui in mundo
Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.
5 : ipsi de mundo sunt ideo de mundo loquuntur et mundus eos audit
They are of the world: therefore speak they of the world, and the world heareth them.
6 : nos ex Deo sumus qui novit Deum audit nos qui non est ex Deo non audit nos in hoc cognoscimus Spiritum veritatis et spiritum erroris
We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.
7 : carissimi diligamus invicem quoniam caritas ex Deo est et omnis qui diligit ex Deo natus est et cognoscit Deum
Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God.
8 : qui non diligit non novit Deum quoniam Deus caritas est
He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.
9 : in hoc apparuit caritas Dei in nobis quoniam Filium suum unigenitum misit Deus in mundum ut vivamus per eum
In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him.
10 : in hoc est caritas non quasi nos dilexerimus Deum sed quoniam ipse dilexit nos et misit Filium suum propitiationem pro peccatis nostris
Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.
11 : carissimi si sic Deus dilexit nos et nos debemus alterutrum diligere
Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another.
12 : Deum nemo vidit umquam si diligamus invicem Deus in nobis manet et caritas eius in nobis perfecta est
No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us.
13 : in hoc intellegimus quoniam in eo manemus et ipse in nobis quoniam de Spiritu suo dedit nobis
Hereby know we that we dwell in him, and he in us, because he hath given us of his Spirit.
14 : et nos vidimus et testificamur quoniam Pater misit Filium salvatorem mundi
And we have seen and do testify that the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world.
15 : quisque confessus fuerit quoniam Iesus est Filius Dei Deus in eo manet et ipse in Deo
Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him, and he in God.
16 : et nos cognovimus et credidimus caritati quam habet Deus in nobis Deus caritas est et qui manet in caritate in Deo manet et Deus in eo
And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him.
17 : in hoc perfecta est caritas nobiscum ut fiduciam habeamus in die iudicii quia sicut ille est et nos sumus in hoc mundo
Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as he is, so are we in this world.
18 : timor non est in caritate sed perfecta caritas foras mittit timorem quoniam timor poenam habet qui autem timet non est perfectus in caritate
There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.
19 : nos ergo diligamus quoniam Deus prior dilexit nos
We love him, because he first loved us.
20 : si quis dixerit quoniam diligo Deum et fratrem suum oderit mendax est qui enim non diligit fratrem suum quem vidit Deum quem non vidit quomodo potest diligere
If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen?
21 : et hoc mandatum habemus ab eo ut qui diligit Deum diligat et fratrem suum
And this commandment have we from him, That he who loveth God love his brother also.

1 : omnis qui credit quoniam Iesus est Christus ex Deo natus est et omnis qui diligit eum qui genuit diligit eum qui natus est ex eo
Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God: and every one that loveth him that begat loveth him also that is begotten of him.
2 : in hoc cognoscimus quoniam diligimus natos Dei cum Deum diligamus et mandata eius faciamus
By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments.
3 : haec est enim caritas Dei ut mandata eius custodiamus et mandata eius gravia non sunt
For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.
4 : quoniam omne quod natum est ex Deo vincit mundum et haec est victoria quae vincit mundum fides nostra
For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.
5 : quis est qui vincit mundum nisi qui credit quoniam Iesus est Filius Dei
Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?
6 : hic est qui venit per aquam et sanguinem Iesus Christus non in aqua solum sed in aqua et sanguine et Spiritus est qui testificatur quoniam Christus est veritas
This is he that came by water and blood, even Jesus Christ; not by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit that beareth witness, because the Spirit is truth.
7 : quia tres sunt qui testimonium dant
For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.
8 : Spiritus et aqua et sanguis et tres unum sunt
And there are three that bear witness in earth, the Spirit, and the water, and the blood: and these three agree in one.
9 : si testimonium hominum accipimus testimonium Dei maius est quoniam hoc est testimonium Dei quod maius est quia testificatus est de Filio suo
If we receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greater: for this is the witness of God which he hath testified of his Son.
10 : qui credit in Filio Dei habet testimonium Dei in se qui non credit Filio mendacem facit eum quoniam non credidit in testimonio quod testificatus est Deus de Filio suo
He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son.
11 : et hoc est testimonium quoniam vitam aeternam dedit nobis Deus et haec vita in Filio eius est
And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.
12 : qui habet Filium habet vitam qui non habet Filium Dei vitam non habet
He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.
13 : haec scripsi vobis ut sciatis quoniam vitam habetis aeternam qui creditis in nomine Filii Dei
These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.
14 : et haec est fiducia quam habemus ad eum quia quodcumque petierimus secundum voluntatem eius audit nos
And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us:
15 : et scimus quoniam audit nos quicquid petierimus scimus quoniam habemus petitiones quas postulavimus ab eo
And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him.
16 : qui scit fratrem suum peccare peccatum non ad mortem petet et dabit ei vitam peccantibus non ad mortem est peccatum ad mortem non pro illo dico ut roget
If any man see his brother sin a sin which is not unto death, he shall ask, and he shall give him life for them that sin not unto death. There is a sin unto death: I do not say that he shall pray for it.
17 : omnis iniquitas peccatum est et est peccatum non ad mortem
All unrighteousness is sin: and there is a sin not unto death.
18 : scimus quoniam omnis qui natus est ex Deo non peccat sed generatio Dei conservat eum et malignus non tangit eum
We know that whosoever is born of God sinneth not; but he that is begotten of God keepeth himself, and that wicked one toucheth him not.
19 : scimus quoniam ex Deo sumus et mundus totus in maligno positus est
And we know that we are of God, and the whole world lieth in wickedness.
20 : et scimus quoniam Filius Dei venit et dedit nobis sensum ut cognoscamus verum Deum et simus in vero Filio eius hic est verus Deus et vita aeterna
And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life.
21 : filioli custodite vos a simulacris
Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen.

II Joannes

1

1 : senior electae dominae et natis eius quos ego diligo in veritate et non ego solus sed et omnes qui cognoverunt veritatem
The elder unto the elect lady and her children, whom I love in the truth; and not I only, but also all they that have known the truth;
2 : propter veritatem quae permanet in nobis et nobiscum erit in aeternum
For the truth's sake, which dwelleth in us, and shall be with us for ever.
3 : sit nobiscum gratia misericordia pax a Deo Patre et a Christo Iesu Filio Patris in veritate et caritate
Grace be with you, mercy, and peace, from God the Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father, in truth and love.
4 : gavisus sum valde quoniam inveni de filiis tuis ambulantes in veritate sicut mandatum accepimus a Patre
I rejoiced greatly that I found of thy children walking in truth, as we have received a commandment from the Father.
5 : et nunc rogo te domina non tamquam mandatum novum scribens tibi sed quod habuimus ab initio ut diligamus alterutrum
And now I beseech thee, lady, not as though I wrote a new commandment unto thee, but that which we had from the beginning, that we love one another.
6 : et haec est caritas ut ambulemus secundum mandata eius hoc mandatum est ut quemadmodum audistis ab initio in eo ambuletis
And this is love, that we walk after his commandments. This is the commandment, That, as ye have heard from the beginning, ye should walk in it.
7 : quoniam multi seductores exierunt in mundum qui non confitentur Iesum Christum venientem in carne hic est seductor et antichristus
For many deceivers are entered into the world, who confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist.
8 : videte vosmet ipsos ne perdatis quae operati estis sed ut mercedem plenam accipiatis
Look to yourselves, that we lose not those things which we have wrought, but that we receive a full reward.
9 : omnis qui praecedit et non manet in doctrina Christi Deum non habet qui permanet in doctrina hic et Filium et Patrem habet
Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son.
10 : si quis venit ad vos et hanc doctrinam non adfert nolite recipere eum in domum nec have ei dixeritis
If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house, neither bid him God speed:
11 : qui enim dicit illi have communicat operibus illius malignis
For he that biddeth him God speed is partaker of his evil deeds.
12 : plura habens vobis scribere nolui per cartam et atramentum spero enim me futurum apud vos et os ad os loqui ut gaudium vestrum plenum sit
Having many things to write unto you, I would not write with paper and ink: but I trust to come unto you, and speak face to face, that our joy may be full.
13 : salutant te filii sororis tuae electae
The children of thy elect sister greet thee. Amen.

III Joannes

1

1 : senior Gaio carissimo quem ego diligo in veritate
The elder unto the wellbeloved Gaius, whom I love in the truth.
2 : carissime de omnibus orationem facio prospere te ingredi et valere sicut prospere agit anima tua
Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.
3 : gavisus sum valde venientibus fratribus et testimonium perhibentibus veritati tuae sicut tu in veritate ambulas
For I rejoiced greatly, when the brethren came and testified of the truth that is in thee, even as thou walkest in the truth.
4 : maiorem horum non habeo gratiam quam ut audiam filios meos in veritate ambulantes
I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth.
5 : carissime fideliter facis quicquid operaris in fratres et hoc in peregrinos
Beloved, thou doest faithfully whatsoever thou doest to the brethren, and to strangers;
6 : qui testimonium reddiderunt caritati tuae in conspectu ecclesiae quos bene facies deducens digne Deo
Which have borne witness of thy charity before the church: whom if thou bring forward on their journey after a godly sort, thou shalt do well:
7 : pro nomine enim profecti sunt nihil accipientes a gentibus
Because that for his name's sake they went forth, taking nothing of the Gentiles.
8 : nos ergo debemus suscipere huiusmodi ut cooperatores simus veritatis
We therefore ought to receive such, that we might be fellowhelpers to the truth.
9 : scripsissem forsitan ecclesiae sed is qui amat primatum gerere in eis Diotrepes non recipit nos
I wrote unto the church: but Diotrephes, who loveth to have the preeminence among them, receiveth us not.
10 : propter hoc si venero commoneam eius opera quae facit verbis malignis garriens in nos et quasi non ei ista sufficiant nec ipse suscipit fratres et eos qui cupiunt prohibet et de ecclesia eicit
Wherefore, if I come, I will remember his deeds which he doeth, prating against us with malicious words: and not content therewith, neither doth he himself receive the brethren, and forbiddeth them that would, and casteth them out of the church.
11 : carissime noli imitari malum sed quod bonum est qui benefacit ex Deo est qui malefacit non vidit Deum
Beloved, follow not that which is evil, but that which is good. He that doeth good is of God: but he that doeth evil hath not seen God.
12 : Demetrio testimonium redditur ab omnibus et ab ipsa veritate et nos autem testimonium perhibemus et nosti quoniam testimonium nostrum verum est
Demetrius hath good report of all men, and of the truth itself: yea, and we also bear record; and ye know that our record is true.
13 : multa habui scribere tibi sed nolui per atramentum et calamum scribere tibi
I had many things to write, but I will not with ink and pen write unto thee:
14 : spero autem protinus te videre et os ad os loquemur
But I trust I shall shortly see thee, and we shall speak face to face. Peace be to thee. Our friends salute thee. Greet the friends by name.

Judas

1

1 : Iudas Iesu Christi servus frater autem Iacobi his qui in Deo Patre dilectis et Iesu Christo conservatis vocatis
Jude, the servant of Jesus Christ, and brother of James, to them that are sanctified by God the Father, and preserved in Jesus Christ, and called:
2 : misericordia vobis et pax et caritas adimpleatur
Mercy unto you, and peace, and love, be multiplied.
3 : carissimi omnem sollicitudinem faciens scribendi vobis de communi vestra salute necesse habui scribere vobis deprecans supercertari semel traditae sanctis fidei
Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.
4 : subintroierunt enim quidam homines qui olim praescripti sunt in hoc iudicium impii Dei nostri gratiam transferentes in luxuriam et solum Dominatorem et Dominum nostrum Iesum Christum negantes
For there are certain men crept in unawares, who were before of old ordained to this condemnation, ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ.
5 : commonere autem vos volo scientes semel omnia quoniam Iesus populum de terra Aegypti salvans secundo eos qui non crediderunt perdidit
I will therefore put you in remembrance, though ye once knew this, how that the Lord, having saved the people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed them that believed not.
6 : angelos vero qui non servaverunt suum principatum sed dereliquerunt suum domicilium in iudicium magni diei vinculis aeternis sub caligine reservavit
And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day.
7 : sicut Sodoma et Gomorra et finitimae civitates simili modo exfornicatae et abeuntes post carnem alteram factae sunt exemplum ignis aeterni poenam sustinentes
Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.
8 : similiter et hii carnem quidem maculant dominationem autem spernunt maiestates autem blasphemant
Likewise also these filthy dreamers defile the flesh, despise dominion, and speak evil of dignities.
9 : cum Michahel archangelus cum diabolo disputans altercaretur de Mosi corpore non est ausus iudicium inferre blasphemiae sed dixit imperet tibi Dominus
Yet Michael the archangel, when contending with the devil he disputed about the body of Moses, durst not bring against him a railing accusation, but said, The Lord rebuke thee.
10 : hii autem quaecumque quidem ignorant blasphemant quaecumque autem naturaliter tamquam muta animalia norunt in his corrumpuntur
But these speak evil of those things which they know not: but what they know naturally, as brute beasts, in those things they corrupt themselves.
11 : vae illis quia via Cain abierunt et errore Balaam mercede effusi sunt et contradictione Core perierunt
Woe unto them! for they have gone in the way of Cain, and ran greedily after the error of Balaam for reward, and perished in the gainsaying of Core.
12 : hii sunt in epulis suis maculae convivantes sine timore semet ipsos pascentes nubes sine aqua quae a ventis circumferuntur arbores autumnales infructuosae bis mortuae eradicatae
These are spots in your feasts of charity, when they feast with you, feeding themselves without fear: clouds they are without water, carried about of winds; trees whose fruit withereth, without fruit, twice dead, plucked up by the roots;
13 : fluctus feri maris despumantes suas confusiones sidera errantia quibus procella tenebrarum in aeternum servata est
Raging waves of the sea, foaming out their own shame; wandering stars, to whom is reserved the blackness of darkness for ever.
14 : prophetavit autem et his septimus ab Adam Enoc dicens ecce venit Dominus in sanctis milibus suis
And Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of these, saying, Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints,
15 : facere iudicium contra omnes et arguere omnes impios de omnibus operibus impietatis eorum quibus impie egerunt et de omnibus duris quae locuti sunt contra eum peccatores impii
To execute judgment upon all, and to convince all that are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have ungodly committed, and of all their hard speeches which ungodly sinners have spoken against him.
16 : hii sunt murmuratores querellosi secundum desideria sua ambulantes et os illorum loquitur superba mirantes personas quaestus causa
These are murmurers, complainers, walking after their own lusts; and their mouth speaketh great swelling words, having men's persons in admiration because of advantage.
17 : vos autem carissimi memores estote verborum quae praedicta sunt ab apostolis Domini nostri Iesu Christi
But, beloved, remember ye the words which were spoken before of the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ;
18 : quia dicebant vobis quoniam in novissimo tempore venient inlusores secundum sua desideria ambulantes impietatum
How that they told you there should be mockers in the last time, who should walk after their own ungodly lusts.
19 : hii sunt qui segregant animales Spiritum non habentes
These be they who separate themselves, sensual, having not the Spirit.
20 : vos autem carissimi superaedificantes vosmet ipsos sanctissimae vestrae fidei in Spiritu Sancto orantes
But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost,
21 : ipsos vos in dilectione Dei servate
Keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life.
22 : et hos quidem arguite iudicatos
And of some have compassion, making a difference:
23 : illos vero salvate de igne rapientes aliis autem miseremini in timore odientes et eam quae carnalis est maculatam tunicam
And others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire; hating even the garment spotted by the flesh.
24 : ei autem qui potest vos conservare sine peccato et constituere ante conspectum gloriae suae inmaculatos in exultatione
Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy,
25 : soli Deo salvatori nostro per Iesum Christum Dominum nostrum gloria magnificentia imperium et potestas ante omne saeculum et nunc et in omnia saecula amen
To the only wise God our Saviour, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever. Amen.
